Which One Among These Tablets Suits Your Needs More?

Lately, I find myself being asked for help to choose between these 4 graphics tablets, while they are all good choices for Wacom alternatives, the one you end up choosing depends on the other criteria's, like the additional features, the number of shortcut keys you want & active drawing area. To make the comparison easier to you, I included little comparison between the 4 graphics tablets below. Basic Specifications

In theory, all the graphics tablets presented here have the same specifications. To start off, they all feature a resolution of 5080 LPI. The resolution of a graphics tablet determines how many lines per-inch the tablet can detect, and it tells you how much the tablet will accurately respond to the movement of your pen. Beyond a certain resolution, the gain in accuracy is very small to be noticeable.

With the exception of Ugee M708, all the graphics tablets has a 233 RPS report rate (Ugee has 230 RPS), or report per second. This is how many times the graphics tablet sends the stylus location to your computer, it has to be fast enough to detect your hand movement. Just like the resolution, beyond a certain point, you don't need a high report rate. It is worth to note that the report rate & the resolution work together. If you are familiar with computer mice, the resolution in LPI is kinda similar to the mouse resolution, which is measured in DPI, and the report rate is very similar to the polling rate.

When it comes to pressure sensitivity, all the graphics tablets I am comparing has pressure sensitivity of 2048, which is typical in all graphics tablets nowadays. It is worth noting that for the any normal art creation work, you don't need very high pressure sensitivity. A pressure sensitivity of 1024 or even 512 is more than enough, and it is unlikely that we as humans can detect or produce that much amount of levels. Also, there are other limitations that can prevent you from utilizing that much pressure level, like the report rate. So in short, the pressure sensitivity is nothing more a marketing gimmick, and something you totally don't need to pay much attention to. Unless you are comparing a graphics tablet with 128 levels of pressure with one with 256 levels maybe.

The Active Drawing Area

The active drawing area is the area of the graphics tablet that responds to the strokes of the stylus, it is different than the size of the graphics tablets itself. I usually advise people to choose a graphics tablet based on the screen size you will use it with, or to choose a medium-sized one in case you are not sure. All the graphics tablets in this comparison are medium-sized, so they are good choice in case you decided to follow my advice.

When it comes to the active area sizes, our graphics tablets here have very close dimensions. Ugee M708 has 10 x 6 Inches, while Huion DWH69 has a narrower active Area of 9 x 6 Inches. Huion 1060 PLUS & Huion H610 Pro both have a slightly higher active area of 10 x 6.25 Inches.

Since the sizes of the active areas are similar, I will make this a tie. But in case you want the largest active area possible, you know which ones have them now.

Shortcut Keys

The importance of this feature varies from a person to another, some don't mind having it but use the keyboard for shortcuts and everything. Others prefer not to have any. Some wants as much as possible so they won't have to use the keyboard at all, which can be quite convenient.

When it comes to our graphics tablets in this comparison, we have 3 that have 8, but one that shines with 12 shortcut keys, which is Huion 1060 plus, making it the winner in that regard.

Some graphics tablets have hot-cell buttons, which are shortcut buttons that can be pressed using the pen, these button are kind of shortcut keys in that they save you from having to reached out for the keyboard at a time. Only two of our graphics tablets here have that function, Huion H610, which has 16, and Huion 1060 Plus, which also has that amount. Even when we incorporate hot-cell buttons into account. Huion 1060 Plus still emerges as a winner here (unless you don't like shortcut keys, which makes Ugee M708 & Huion DWH69 more suitable choice for you).

The Pen

As the part you will be holding while you draw, the pen is an important part of a graphics tablet. Without it, the graphics tablet is nothing more a keyboard with very few buttons. There are few aspects I am going to address when it comes to the pen, which are the power source, the number of replacement nibs that comes with it, the existence of eraser at the back of the pen, as well as the number of buttons on the pen itself.

Power Source

As far as I know, Wacom is the only company that produces graphics tablets that requires no battery to work at all. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Ugee M708's pen works using one AAA battery, making it the only pen that requires you to buy batteries for it. All the other graphics tablets come with a rechargable pen, which is charged by a cable that comes with the tablet. The battery tends to last for a long time, so it is not that you will need to charge it that often.

Replacement Nibs

First, let's talk on why you would need to replace the pen nib of your graphics tablets. If you are familiar with that, feel free to skip this paragraph. As you draw with your graphics tablet, the nib of the pen tends to wear off after some time which cause it to become pointy, as the nib may cause scratches in your tablet surface. You need to replace the pen nib with a new one once that happen. The amount of time a nib can last depends on the amount of pressure you apply on the pen, and the texture of the graphics tablet. This is one of the reasons some artists prefer the older graphics tablets over the newer one.

When it comes to the number of replacement nibs, Ugee M708 is clearly the winner here, with the 8 nibs that comes inside the pen holder. All the other tablets in this comparison comes with 4 replacement nibs only (You can buy more nibs in case you ran out of them).

Eraser Function

None of the graphics tablets in this comparisons has an eraser at the back of it. Having an eraser at the back of your pencil is a nice way to emulate the way we draw in real life. But since there are fast way to switch between the eraser & the pencil/brush we draw with, many artists find themselves not using it that much.

Pen Shortcut Keys

The pens of the compared graphics tablets all have 2 customizable keys on the side of the pen. Which you can program one of them to access the eraser or to undo/redo in case you use that function a lot.

Operating Systems Support

When it comes to operating system support, it means which operating systems the graphics tablets will work on. We have two cases, you either use an old operating system, and want to make sure the graphics tablet you are getting will work on it. Or your operating system is relatively new, and you want to make sure there is a driver available for it.

When it comes to Windows, all the graphics tablets here supports Windows XP and later, this includes Windows 10. So you are pretty much covered if you are a Windows user.

As for Mac OSX, there is a variety of which early version is supported. Huion DWH69 & Huion H610 Pro support Mac OS X 10.8 or above. Huion 1060 Plus supports 10.7.4 or above. Ugee M708 supports Max OS X 10.4 or above, which make it the clear winner in case you have an old Mac that uses good old Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.

Please note that the supported operating system I mention doesn't guarantee that you won't run into driver issues. But it is better to know if your operating system is supported before buying your tablet.

Additional Features

Now this comparison has came to an end, let's talk about the additional features. Which are the features that are not very typical of graphics tablets, or features you can live without if your graphics tablet doesn't support it.

There are two tablets with such features. First, Huion DWH69 has wireless, a feature that can save you from the clutter of cables. It also has a screen that shows you the battery life & few other things.

On the other hand, Huion 1060 PLUS MicroSD card reader, which can read cards of up to 64 GB. This can be convenient in case you are getting your tablet to retouch the photos you took with your digital camera. Having such reader in a graphics tablet may be weird, so I guess that Huion is trying to differentiate its products from competition, which is not a bad thing.
